The reason why is that I have been in school. This is an assignment for my english class. This is an essay I wrote and the assignment here is to have something published. Well I decided to publish this to my own blog. This blog is mostly about sewing and retro style, but it is also about my adventures in motherhood, and this is the story of one of the most important adventures I have had so far. <br />
Besos!<br />

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;">I remember hearing the words <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">autism spectrum disorder. </i>Then
everything got fuzzy. The doctor’s words became a muffled succession of blah,
blah, blah. My eight year old son sat on the doctor’s table staring at me
blankly. How could he be autistic? He did not fit any of the symptoms that I
had been told about. I had an image in my head of what autism was and it seemed
so much more severe than this. The doctor explained that the form of autism my
son had was called Asperger’s syndrome. Asperger’s is a high functioning form
of autism that involves social awkwardness and repetitive behaviors, and as the
doctor continued to list the symptoms, she painted a clear picture of my
beautiful boy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>That first day I spent crying alone
in my room. I took this diagnosis very hard and tried to find ways to blame it
on myself. I felt guilty for having four other children. I felt selfish for
taking on so much when it was now apparent that my oldest son had special needs.
I had known that something was different about Noah for a long time. I couldn’t
understand why no one else could see what I saw in my son. He was bright and
sweet. He was considerate of others and loved me and his siblings very much,
always showing us with hugs and smiles. I could no longer ignore his other
behaviors though, the ones he showed mostly when around people he was
uncomfortable with. He wouldn’t speak and when he did it was choppy, off topic,
and monotone. He had twitches and couldn’t be without his Legos or a complete
tantrum would ensue.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>After walking around like a wounded
animal for a couple of weeks, my depression began to grow. I couldn’t keep up
with the demands of my busy life. I finally looked in the mirror one day at the
bags under my eyes, my hair in disarray and said to myself, “what is wrong with
you”! I went into my room and called all of my children to come to me. We laid
down in my bed, barely big enough to fit my large clan, and cuddled. I looked
around at all of their faces and was reminded of why I should be grateful
instead of angry. Anger is a gateway emotion. It is only useful to help you to
get to a more useful feeling. You can use the anger to inspire you to rise up
and fight against the angst and make things right, or you can allow it to lead
you on a path of self-pity and depression. I had a good reason to be upset but
I had an even better one to rise above it. My son’s diagnosis was not my fault.
This was not a result of something I did or didn’t do. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>From that day forward I decided that
this was not going to take over my life and it would not rule my son’s.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>People living with Asperger’s usually don’t
view the world in the same way as others. After many talks with my son, I
realized that he was not very aware that he was different. His way of
experiencing the world was internal. Everything that happened around him had
very little importance when compared to what happened inside his head. When
other students were mean, he couldn’t even tell most of the time. The problem
was mostly mine. I had to realize that he was fine. With some accommodations
from his school, he was finally enjoying it and catching up to the other student’s
level. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

people. My son is his own person, and he was just fine with his diagnosis and
thought no less of himself. This was earth shattering only to me. My son, with
only eight years of life in his pocket, showed me that life goes on. If you
can’t get over the hurdles, walk around them. It has been three years since his
diagnosis and we have come a long way. My son has his good days and his bad
days and so do I, but we hold each other’s hand and face them together.</span>Lucha Lovelyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03575997509606377320noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2840154405446336323.post-39378670967995443212011-12-31T07:58:00.000-07:002011-12-31T07:58:13.452-07:00Reflections On 2011 and Hopes For 2012<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-suTdPNvM3Wc/Tv8abIfQAqI/AAAAAAAAA0o/Jd86s5xVsm8/s1600/rosie1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rea="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-suTdPNvM3Wc/Tv8abIfQAqI/AAAAAAAAA0o/Jd86s5xVsm8/s1600/rosie1.jpg" /></a></div>
As 2011 draws to a close I am naturally reflecting on all the things I accomplished this year. 2011 was a great year overall but the passage of time is inevitable and we must all say goodbye to one year and welcome the next. I got a lot of sewing done this year, even though I started out the year exhausted and frustrated with my hobby. I didn't sew for about 5 months. Sometimes you start to over think things, every sewing failure is a reason why you should just walk away from your sewing machine and never look back! I have had a rough couple of weeks recently at my sewing machine and that caused me to think back on my sewing hiatus of the beginning of the year. I realized that sometimes I am way to hard on myself!!! I have accomplished a lot at that sewing machine, and I always do my best when I don't over think things. This goes for sewing, and everything else in my life as well! I sewed 40 plus garments this year! Everyone of them still very wearable and cute! That is no small feat for a mother of 5! I made myself a small wardrobe of retro inspired clothing. I made my daughter a small wardrobe of her own! I finally made something for my boys! These are all great things that I plan to build on in 2012. At the same time I would like to make a resolution to not take everything so seriously! If I can never sew a couture garment, oh well!!!!!!! I will try to challenge myself, but will not feel guilty about making easy dresses!!!!! I will continue to only sew my own wardrobe and try to not buy RTW. It is just to hard to go back once you are on this train! But I will not feel guilty that I can not make all of my children's clothes at home. I have 5 children, 4 of which are boys and they grow very quickly and tear things up! I haven't the time or the heart for it! I will try to make them whatever I can, but will not feel bad when I can't! I guess the ultimate lesson I am taking away from 2011 and setting for myself as a resolution for 2012 is this; Do all that you can, when you can, and cut yourself some slack when you can't. Almost like the serenity prayer.......kind of. <br />
I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!! And remember, don't be so hard and yourself and celebrate the small things!!!!!!!!!!<br />

Happy Holidays everybody!! I know I have not been blogging as of late and I am sorry for that!!! I have been very busy getting ready for the holidays and working my day job for all it's worth to be able to afford the holidays!! We had a nice Christmas in these parts and I hope that you all had a lovely day with your families! We had two lovely dinners, one on Christmas eve and one on Christmas day. The children could not be happier with all the fun and gifts. We spent a couple of laid back days just enjoying each others company, eating, drinking, and being merry. As for the picture up above, you will notice with your keen eyes that one of the stockings is a sock, lol! at the last minute I realized that I had not made a stocking for my youngest son! My husband thought it would be funny to hang a sock up there instead. Don't fret though, I whipped one up for him quickly after I realized that the sock was hanging there, unfortunately, these pics were already taken, documenting my epic fail as a crafting Mama for all posterity to witness.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also whipped up was this last minute green dress. I had started a couple dresses this week that were doomed to the UFO pile. I was so busy and had such a limited time and the fabrics for the other dresses were just not fabrics that could be rushed to take form. Maybe I will pick them up another time and finish them. I hate leaving unfinished business. So I made this little dress out of a simple poly cotton blend, which is great for a rush job. The hemline is shorter than what I usually do because I didn't have much of this fabric, oops! It is cute anyways but to be honest with you, the zipper came out super wonky, one of my worsts and the dress was pretty tight. I really liked the color and the style though so I may buy some more of this green fabric and make it again, in a bigger size, and with a longer skirt!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My daughter got a simple little dress in a pretty fabric, the one she is wearing above. I will have to take some better pics of it, but she was happy. She also got a new nightgown which I surprised her with on Christmas morning. I kept it completely from her sight until she unwrapped it. I had sprayed it with some cotton candy scented body spray before wrapping it as well. I think scent memory is important and I hope that when she is all grown up and smells the scent of cotton candy she will remember the pink princessy nightgown her mother sewed her for Christmas!</div>

So that is our lovely Christmas!!!!!!! Oh, can you see the box in the corner of the last picture of my daughter? That is my new super awesome sewing machine that my hubby bought me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Soooooooo excited about it!!!!!!!!! It is a Brother, because that is what I love to sew on and all of my presser feet from my old machine will still fit the new. It is a CP-7500. While it is not an innovis, it is a much better machine than the one I had before. I will do a full review on the machine once I get a chance to give it a good test run.You can check it out <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Brother-CP-7500-Computerized-Sewing-Machine/dp/B0039YOVSG/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1324918476&sr=8-11">here</a>. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy Thursday y'all!!!! Christmas is fast approaching and time is a precious commodity when you make home made gifts! I also have this crazy tradition where I make something for myself and my daughter to wear for every holiday!! If I don't do this, I feel like I am just not getting things accomplished! The other day the subject of time management came up on one of my Burdastyle project posts. One lovely comment complimented me on my pants and blouse project and asked me how I find the time for my sewing with being such a busy mother. This got me thinking that I should write a little bit about my time management. As you all know, or maybe not, I have 5 children ages 2-11. I also work part time from home as an interpreter. As you can imagine, my day is beyond busy and everyday feels like I am running a marathon! However, sewing is very important to me so I make the time to get a little done almost everyday. I think that it is important for a mother to take time for herself and her own endeavors. Sewing makes me happy and when I am happy, the rest of the family is happy too. I wake up early in the morning, before everyone else in the house and get things done! First I make my husband his food for his work day. I know this sounds a bit archaic but I look at it as something nice I can do for him that offers some comfort while he works his long back breaking hours. Then after I send him off to work, I sew. I usually sew for about 40 minutes to an hour and you would be surprised by how much you can get done! Of course I don't get anything done in one session, my projects are a result of many small sessions. I used to try to find big blocks of time to make projects and I never got anything done! As you can imagine, I never found that big block of time. It became frustrating and I was always upset about my abandoned hobby. So I decided to take just a little time each day to do this for myself and the results have been amazing. The rest of my day is crazy! So sewing is really my only quite time. Once my children wake up I feed them breakfast and get the older ones ready for school and get them off to the bus. Then I work for 4 hrs a day from home and my sister watches my 2 younger kiddos. When I get off of work I make my kids lunch and straighten up the house a bit. I have a little extra time then to just catch up with my little ones before the big ones get home. When everyone gets home, the kids from school and hubby from work, we do homework. I have to sit with each of my kids one at a time and check work and help them with what they are having trouble with. I also do some work with my younger 2 to help them prepare for all the learning they will have to do when they start school. I then make dinner, or my sister does since she is living with us right now. After dinner I give my kids baths and get them ready for bed. We read a story and I tuck them in. After that, I relax with my hubby and watch some TV or if he is playing xbox, I will prepare a pattern or cut some fabric. That is it! I also sleep 7 hrs a night. I do alot while I work as well, I am a multitasking expert. I have a little pedal bike thingy( not a real term!) that I pedal while I work on the phone. I do squats while I brush my teeth and push ups and crunches before bed. It is a sad work out routine I know, but it is all I can manage to squeeze in. So are my days are hectic, yes, but it is a good life that I live filled with great moments and small accomplishments! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So back to Christmas gift making! Next Thursday is the last day of school before break. So I have 1 week to get the teachers gifts done! I always make gifts because in my humble price range, I don't like the store offered gifts. I also like the personal touch of something home made. This year I am using the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Yard-Wonders-Sewing-Fabric-Projects/dp/1603424490#_">One Yard Wonders</a> as my life saver!!! I will be using this book to make some gifts for my kids as well. The greatness of this book is that everything takes just one yard, as per the title of the book. So that is a pretty affordable gift wouldn't you say? For the teachers I will be making bags. The folklore bag to be exact. It is stylish and easy to make! Will I get them done in time? I need to make a minimum of 3 but would like to get 5 done for a total cost of $30. I am armed with coupons and a free Sunday of sewing with my 2 year old on my lap and my kids playing with Lego's under foot! Wish me luck on maneging my time! </div>

I have been sewing!!!! Always, no matter what I have on my plate, I am sewing! What a marvelous hobby sewing is! You get to relieve all the stresses of everyday life and in the end you get a wearable work of art! This week I made a much needed pair of pants that I have been meaning to get to for 2 months now!!!!!! It is freezing over here so pants were a must! If you are going to make a new pair of pants than of course, you need a new blouse to go with it!!!!! So I made that too.</div>

The pants were made from this <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/102011-houndstooth-bell-bottoms">Burdastyle pattern</a> that I made some alterations to. The original pattern has a front fly closure and side seam pockets. I decided that I wanted pants with a side closure and front patch pockets, so I did that. I used the pattern almost exactly. Where the front fly was, I just traced the center front line all the way up, eliminating the fly. I sewed up all of my pieces and left the left side unsewn for a lapped zipper. With this pattern you have to draft the waistband yourself any ways so I drafted it to be closed on the side. I used 2 cute snaps for the job. My buttonholer is not working, but the snaps were cuter anyway. I drafted the patch pockets myself, and am very happy with the way they came out.</div>

The blouse is New Look, <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-4694-misses-tops.aspx">6937</a>. I picked this up this weekend and even though the neckline is a bit tricky, it was really easy to make. I made a size 10, because I didn't want it to be so big! Like I said, the neckline, which is a tunic style was a bit tricky, but I vow to find an easier way to do it because I really like this top. I am on a hunt for blouses with no closures, because of laziness and because of above mentioned button whole problem. </div>

Here are my snaps!! Please excuse this pic of my uncut threads, bad seamstress! I get my snaps through <a href="http://www.snapsource.com/">snapsource</a>. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not sure, but by now I think most of you Know that I am a Latin girl. My roots are in Cuba to be exact. I am a girl who is deeply in touch with her roots and at the same time have sprouted new ones, American ones. I was Born in the United States and in fact, my mother is an all American girl from North Carolina. I grew up with what I think is the best of both worlds, in Miami. Growing up in a city like Miami, you have the Cuban culture in front of you at all times! I speak fluent spanish and my day job is as an interpreter. So you could say that the language of my forefathers has allowed me to live out my American dream. Cuba went through it's "revolution" in the 1950's, when a dictator came in to power, and froze the country in time. As a result, the island is said to be like a trip back in time to the 1950's. It was a time of elegance and the people dressed the part. I guess mostly, this post is about the inspiration that this time and place has upon me. When I sew my vintage inspired clothes, I always feel like I am sending a shout out to my grandparents. I heard many stories and saw many pictures as a girl growing up in my Abuela's house (grandmother's). The pictures were so glamorous and my Grandparents were always so poised, not like the random pictures of today, where people have shiney faces and bed hair and make silly faces in their pajamas. I always wanted to go back to that time and place some how. My Grandmother is one of my greatest style influences. I always aim to have even the tiniest amount of elegance that she has always had so much of. Today Cuba is a run down country, hanging on by a thread due to the mania of a corrupt government. I have never been there in person, but the Cuba I know is the one of the 1950's shown to me by my Grandparents in all of it's glamour and gleaming night lights. </div>

Here are a couple of pictures of my paternal Grandparents in Cuba. these are the images I grew up with. Weren't they spectacular? I am lucky enough to still have my Abuela with me, even though she is on the other side of the country from me. She is still a phone call away, even though I must admit, I don't call her as much as I should! My Abuelo passed last year, and it was a hard blow to my family. He will always be with us though, he is a part of everything we are and everything we do. Isn't he dapper in these pictures?</div>

Here are the paper drafts of the above sloper with seam allowances drawn in. I still would like to refine the fit a tiny bit and then put it to the real test and actually use it to design an actual wearable garment. When I first started sewing I used to draft my own patterns all of the time! They were simple garments with little design detail. My husband and I got married in a courthouse wedding and I made my own dress, a simple sheath, with my own pattern. Since I became more comfortable using big company patterns however, I got more and more afraid of drafting anything. With this whole sloper experiment, I am trying to get get my footing back. I have also been doing regular sewing all along as well. I made not only my date night LBD, but a fully lined jacket, and 4 more dresses, in the last 2 weeks alone. To say that I have been busy is an understatement. I will however see this project through to fruition! I still would like to get the skirt portion of my sloper, which should not be as hard as the bodice, done. At the same time, I will take it slow and do this step by step and try to learn to do it well. Pattern drafting is on my new years resolution list! </div>

First of all, look at the severe red eye here!!! I didn't correct this pic because I thought it was very interesting how my eyes completely match my lipstick!!! These red eyes were highly appropriate as I was all dressed up for a date night with the Mister to go see the latest installment of a guilty pleasure vampire flick that shall remain nameless due to the mixed feeling that run rampant about it!</div>

I made this dress using New Look <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2419-misses-dresses.aspx">6723</a> view D, which I have had for like 6 years believe it or not and just used for the first time!!!! I have to say that this pattern was very easy to make, it took me maybe 3 hours of actual sewing. I have even made it again in view B for Thanksgiving! For a pattern I haven't touched in 6 years, twice in one week says something! It is a great pattern and I only recommend a couple of changes, one, the arm holes seemed a bit, and I mean a very little, bit restrictive. Next time I may make them just the tiniest bit larger, but this is probably because I have a larger upper back, this alteration may not hold true for everybody. The second thing is that I don't really like the skirt. It is not full enough for my taste. I would draft a fuller skirt to go with it, I did for the Thanksgiving dress in fact. </div>

Well that's it for my date night LBD. I will try to get my finished sloper post up by Tuesday and then hopefully I will have lots of pretty pictures to share of my thanksgiving celebration. I hope everyone is having a lovely time preparing for the impending feast!<br />

I have officially named November as "Bite off more than you can chew" month. I am still working on getting a working sloper and have found a couple more resources to share on that front. I have no idea why this is turning out to be so challenging for me! I want it to be just right and am not having an easy time of it. The sloper I generated with the free software did not work out. It wasn't horrible, but it was far enough off that I would rather stick to trying to draft it by hand. I'm not saying that the software isn't good, it was more likely my measurement taking, which I stink at. It is hard to measure yourself! I hope to get this chapter in my personal sewing book closed by this weekend!!!! I have been getting a bit anxious with the whole thing and decided to start another project to work on simultaneously. This project is one from a pattern that I already have. It is a bit refreshing sometimes to just get started right away with a pattern and just sew away. So as far as the sloper resources, here you go, a website <a href="http://trantanphat.com/tailoring/drafting/d_fr_bod_sloper.html">here</a>, where you plug in your measurements and then get detailed instructions on how to draft the front of a bodice sloper. And a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/DonMcCunn">youtube channel</a> by the author of the book I have on drafting sewing patterns. If I can't get a sloper done using all of the resources that I have collected through out this time than I am truly a lost cause!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Moving on to some lighter fair, here are some pics for inspiration. These are pics of Jaime King on her new show "Hart of Dixie" starring Rachel Bilson. Now I have not seen this show so I have no Idea if it is any good, but by the wardrobe worn by Ms. King it may very well be worth a look, even if just to see her outfits every week. The various websites that have mentioned her style as an inspiration for fall, have dubbed it "Southern Belle" style, and while I can understand this reference, I would like to label her style as "Retro Fabulous" Do you agree?</div>

Here with the cast, she is a definite stand out!! Yellow is obviously a good color for her, not so much for me! But her look here, day dress with a cardi and neatly retro styled hair is a great every day look for any one who prefers a retro aesthetic. If it is cold you can throw on some stockings and a coat and this look goes through every season!!!!!<br />
Have any of you seen the show? should I tune in? or is Jaime's wardrobe the only high note?<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am going to talk to you today about the value of a sloper. A sloper is a basic fitting garment that can used as the basis of endless designs. It has many names, sloper, block, or fitting shell. As far as design goes you can employ a couple different methods. You can drape a garment, using a dressform and a persons measurements combined or you can use the flat pattern method. For the flat pattern method you will need a sloper. You can then use this sloper as a foundation to create virtually any style you would like. This is achieved by a process of cutting and pivoting. You would cut your pattern and pivot to achieve dart placement and fullness in different places. You can change the neckline and style as well, and add fit and design ease. The sloper is like a second skin, made to fit the exact measurements of the wearer, threads describes it as a 2D dress form. Dress forms are actually made from slopers that are made from "ideal" measurements for different sizes. You can actually use your sloper to make a dressform, a process which is described in the book that I previously recommended, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0932538002/ref=asc_df_09325380021769610?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=0932538002">How to Make Sewing Patterns</a>" by Donald H. McCunn. Having a sloper is great not just for drafting patterns from scratch but also for altering your favorite name brand sewing patterns. You can use your fitting shell to compare to your pattern of choice to get a better idea of how the finished garment will fit and what alterations, if any, need to be made to the pattern. Making a sloper and on paper is of course not enough, you have to make the sloper in muslin and really judge if the fit is spot on or needs adjusting. Once done in muslin, you can rip it apart and use this a a durable pattern without worry that it could be damaged like a paper pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGLjC7w3CZQtlwVi763TbX1OsoMpyxFpLMBZswTHMzvB2uh9BzN0V12-V02weF5LJuvUwSVofIpMqwaeCLMWenJ8XHJqlfE-3_1h3T9hA9sZkDeAl5yMFDUiaxxVv-uGi-mGtCnbI6a2k/s1600/M2718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGLjC7w3CZQtlwVi763TbX1OsoMpyxFpLMBZswTHMzvB2uh9BzN0V12-V02weF5LJuvUwSVofIpMqwaeCLMWenJ8XHJqlfE-3_1h3T9hA9sZkDeAl5yMFDUiaxxVv-uGi-mGtCnbI6a2k/s320/M2718.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<br />
Now to make a sloper you have a few options. You can draft one out by hand using the help of a good book that describes the process. This can be a bit involved and trying. It is a great experience though. I spent my entire weekend trying to draft my muslin from scratch with little success. I have gotten close but not close enough. Granted, I was battling a cold all weekend and just don't think my mind was sharp enough for taking on this endeavor. So I took to the internet for some assistance and found some great resources. The book I have is great but I was looking for a quick fix. You can purchase a pattern for a fitting shell from mcalls, <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m2718-products-726.php?page_id=528">here</a>. You can buy this and make alterations if needed. Burdastyle also has some free downloadable options for slopers, <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/basic-bodice-size-uk-10-us-8-eu-38">here</a>. Free is great right?! The only thing is that it comes in one size, and if you are far from that size, you will have to do a lot of altering, so you may be better off just drafting from scratch and using that burdastyle one as a reference. As far as how to use your sloper for pattern alterations, please read <a href="http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/4498/the-merits-of-a-basic-fitting-pattern/page/all">this</a> threads article! Threads is an amazing resource for any home seamstress, and this article is no different. <br />
Now to take sloper drafting to the next level, you can use a CAD software program for pattern drafting. Now I am no techie, by any means so this type of software is scary to say the least. It is something that I am interested in so it would do me good to get over it and quick. I started a google search on the topic of these software programs and found a good<a href="http://www.taunton.com/threads/pages/t00152.asp"> article</a> about the different options out there which lead me to this program. PatternMaker has a free <a href="http://patternmakerusa.com/products/program/">basic reader</a> option that with a few measurements, will generate a free basic bodice sloper for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's right, and it is free!!!!! This is only for the bodice though.You can then print it out from your home printer, just like a burdastyle pattern!!! They also offer programs that you can purchase and do a whole lot more with, I may consider buying one in the future, if I work up the guts to spend my money. So I tried out the free portion of the software and generated my bodice block. I printed it out this morning and plan on making a muslin between today and tomorrow to see how accurate the fit is.<br />
The value of a good sloper speaks for itself. This is a great home sewing tool that we should all have in our arsenal!!!! My hope with this project is to be able to recreate some vintage styles that I may not be able to get a pattern for. I hope to have a lot of fun with it and I hope that these resources are helpful to some of you who may be interested in making your own sloper. Happy Sewing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br />
Besos!!!!!!<br />

Another thing leaving me toasty these days are the special holiday teas by celestial seasonings!!!! My favorite of which is the sugar cookie sleigh ride flavor!!! This tea really tastes like sugar cookies, which are my favorite cookies, it's genius!!! Celestial seasonings is also based out of Boulder Colorado so I always feel like I am doing something good for local commerce by buying their teas!!! You can pick these up in a local grocery store or online <a href="http://celestialseasonings.elsstore.com/view/category/367-holiday-tea/">here</a>. The candy cane flavor is delicious as well!</div>

As far as sewing goes, I have done none this week! I have a lot on deck for November so I better get with it! I have actually been working on a pattern drafting project, so it hasn't been all tea drinking and tissues this week!. I am working on drafting a sloper! A sloper or block pattern is a main basic pattern that one can use to adapt and basically create any pattern they'd like. I will be doing a full post on Monday about this topic so look out for that! I have the book pictured above, How to Make Sewing Patterns by Donald H. McCunn, you can buy it online <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Make-Sewing-Patterns-Donald-McCunn/dp/0932538002#_">here</a>. This is a fabulous book!!!!!! It is a must have for the home seamstress who is interested in taking design on. I have had it for a while but just decided to dig it out and follow it to the letter so I can get some of my own designs drafted! I will be making the bodice and skirt blocks and then the pants block. To do so I have the tools below, also in my stash for quite some time now and I use them for pattern alteration all of the time!!! You can but them online <a href="http://www.tru-fitpatterns.com/index.php?crn=226&rn=468&action=show_detail">here</a>.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Y_SPr-GWZ5H8xBS-IUNvtgFt1uGvw6NEy6jxv-I6-lD8X7YIFm7KeGdCxL3tObzj0eQx6R2SSlnSe-UynYiRz6mZSZOgUtqUHL8Sf7T8tVthUeYNbH_RNi42Ryj7fqjnNPfi69Z48uU/s1600/468_image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Y_SPr-GWZ5H8xBS-IUNvtgFt1uGvw6NEy6jxv-I6-lD8X7YIFm7KeGdCxL3tObzj0eQx6R2SSlnSe-UynYiRz6mZSZOgUtqUHL8Sf7T8tVthUeYNbH_RNi42Ryj7fqjnNPfi69Z48uU/s320/468_image.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
So I will be drafting up my blocks and then making them in muslin, which I will then rip apart and keep for endless use! I would like to make 2 dresses, a pair of pants, and a jacket this month. Ambitious? Maybe...... We will see what I can get done, and of course I will be posting all about it here. Have any of you ever tried your hand at pattern drafting?<br />
I hope you all are keeping warm!!!!!!!!!!!<br />

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you all had a fun and safe evening and got lots of candy and pics of your little ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last night was fun, and crazy hectic!!!!!! Halloween costumes were a race to the finish this year with my oldest son not deciding on a costume until the 28th and my costume getting done within 2 days at the very last minute. In the end though, I got a new blouse, a new skirt and a kitschy jacket, never to be worn again at the same time however, it was to much pink at once, I blinded some of the neighborhood kids.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here we have(from left to right) a vampire, a lalaloopsy doll, a skeleton pirate, a wild animal, and a ninja. The ninja was a no sew project. Remember it was so last minute. Sometimes Halloween is about what you have and what you can make of it. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My Daughters dress was a success but her hair was not! I bought 2 different types of spray for our hair on Halloween. Mine was streaks and tips and hers was color bombz, both bought at Sally's. I can now tell you that the color bombz was a waste of money! It barely gave a vague tint to her black hair. I curled it and put her bangs into a pin curl. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here I am, in all my pink glory!!! I had to wear a black cardigan under my jacket because it was very chilly outside and my jacket was unlined. I ended up drafting the skirt and jacket myself because of a shortage of funds for pattern buying. Halloween should not put you in the poor house.</div>

Well that is it for my Halloween. It is November now, the year is just flying by. Time to get back to reality and start planning for the next holidays. I have a lot of sewing to do and meals to plan!!! I hope you all will continue to join me for those projects!!!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the final costume idea for Halloween. I hope this gives you all enough time to sew this up! This is an easy costume and the jumpsuit is super cute!!! You can sew up this Burdastyle<a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/52010-jumpsuit"> jumpsuit</a> in a navy blue poplin or twill. Throw on a red bandanna and voila!!!! Don't forget your red lipstick and make sure you flex your muscles at every given chance!!!!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In other news, I can't wait to get back to regularly scheduled sewing!!! I have been sewing for Halloween for a couple of weeks now and I'm getting antsy!!!! My sons costumes were pretty easy, I almost feel guilty. The one giving me a bit of work is my daughters, of course! So much tulle and netting! ugh!!! I love the look and effect of these fabrics but the handling of them is just awful!!! It's like sewing through clouds!!!!!!It gets away from you so easily. I have yet to start on my own costume, I have the fabric sitting there yelling at me. My costume is going to be a last minute sprint to the finish line in true Lucha Lovely fashion! I would rock on Project Runway, because I am a last minute rock star!! I really try to do things with plenty of time to get them done right but sometimes things just don't work out that way. After Halloween I am going to start back on my wardrobe immediately!!!! For November I have a lot on deck. I would like to make a coat since the cold weather has finally come to visit us in Colorado. I love love love this <a href="http://www.modcloth.com/Modcloth/Womens/Outerwear/Coats/-Red-It-All-Before-Coat">Modcloth</a> coat pictured below. You know how I feel about leopard and red, divine!!! I have never made a coat before but I feel that I could take it on without pulling out all of my hair. I also need some more pants and will be doing a tutorial on those!!! I also would like to get some dresses done for thanksgiving and my anniversary as well. I know it sounds like a lot but I know I can do it!!!! So look out for an exciting month of November and make sure to check out my Halloween post on Nov.1st with all the pics of our trick or treating adventures!!!</div>

Marilyn Monroe is an icon!!! Who wouldn't want to be her, even for one night? Her whit dress in The Seven Year Itch was a pleated confection of fabulousness!!!!!!!! For this costume we will making a dress that hits all of the right notes in Marilyn's, without the pleating. You can use simplicity 3823, a halter dress pattern with a full gathered skirt. It is pretty simple to make and in a nice white fabric everyone will know who you are!!!</div>

Just give your hair a nice roller set and then spray it when it is all done!!!! Don't forget some sultry makeup and you're all set. Simple and sweet!</div>

Hello everybody! Here is the second post in our Halloween costume series. For this post we will be putting together a Sandy costume. I know that this makes 3 grease costumes, but they are great costumes and people will know who you are right away.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For our version we will be doing Sandy in her Rydell High cheer leading costume. This is basically a sweater and a circle skirt. You can make a long sleeve knit top using this Burdastyle <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/092011-striped-top">pattern</a>. You can make it in a t-shirt knit or you can make it more sweater like with a sweater weight knit. Next you would add a peter pan collar, also in knit, remember to sew with a stretch or zig zag stitch so you can still pull this top over your head, no closures here. You can find a tutorial by Gertie on how to draft a peter pan collar <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2010/02/drafting-peter-pan-collar-part-one.html">here</a>. You can then use iron on <a href="http://www.walmart.com/ip/Epson-Iron-On-Cool-Peel-Transfer-Paper-8.5-x11/4858118">transfer paper</a> to print out a Rydell High cheer leading logo and iron it on to your top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the skirt you will need a red fabric. You can use this New Look <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-6127-misses-skirts-top.aspx">pattern</a> or you can draft your own. Casey just finished a circle skirt sew along and you can use her<a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2011/09/cssa-drafting/"> instructions</a> to draft a pattern. To make the hem nice and swingy (I know, that is not a word) you can hem it with horse hair braid.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For her blond hair, if you don't already have blond hair, we will use spray of course! This color is from Streaks N Tips in pale blond and you can get it from <a href="http://www.sallybeauty.com/haircolor-spray/SBS-625044,default,pd.html?green=70556461-BD4E-581C-9D0F-CECF6FFD8FE4&cm_vc=MYBUYS">Sally's</a>. First put your hair in a ponytail and then spray it. Finish it of with a red ribbon. Keep your makeup natural and innocent as is befitting of Sandy! </div>

Happy Halloween time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Halloween, like any good seamstress. It is a time to express your creativity with out the limitations of ever day dress. Costumes are to sewing as surrealism is to painting. I love coming up with fun ideas for costumes and being different and original. This is why I sew my costumes. Store bought rtw costumes are essentially a sin. First off, everybody is buying the same costumes. Who wants to show up to a party dressed the same as 5 other people? Second, store bought costumes seem to be mostly poorly made with horrible fabrics. I understand that this may be an outfit worn just once, but you want it to last through the night right? So in the spirit of a handmade Halloween, let's talk costumes!!! First I will let you know what I am making for my children and then I will discuss costumes for us grown up children. I would like to start a series to share costume ideas that I have planned out and hopefully will help some of you girls to create the costume of your dreams!!! I would like to talk to you about vintage inspired costumes that you can make to celebrate the holiday and then turn around and incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. So let's begin!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGe_haH_A51ALVCVQbzVuXjNDdphCHebjoBMVL0kO_3p5aiPb1YUW1nR6I61GbtrqwpCUcezmcjxbltEhQPz6BEyKaKJUyT7bxHJxKNBRN2zGuQQMvFFC_2SpTHUvJ374RxGXGggdnGM/s1600/tippy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGe_haH_A51ALVCVQbzVuXjNDdphCHebjoBMVL0kO_3p5aiPb1YUW1nR6I61GbtrqwpCUcezmcjxbltEhQPz6BEyKaKJUyT7bxHJxKNBRN2zGuQQMvFFC_2SpTHUvJ374RxGXGggdnGM/s1600/tippy.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First we will talk about what I am making for my daughter. She is the fun one to sew for after all. My boys are all going to be little ghoulish things, that I will also be making and I will definitely post the finished results. That being said, they are pretty run of the mill ghoulish things, but hey, what can you do about it. So my daughter and I decided that she was going to be a lalaloopsy doll. The one pictured above too be exact. Her name is Tippy Tumblelina and she is fabulous!!! I love these dolls, they are not rag dolls, obviously but they are made to look like rag dolls and each comes with a story about the fabric that they were "sewn" with. Too cute right? Well of course this year there is a rtw lalaloopsy costume on the market. However the rtw version is for different dolls so Missy Xiu does not have to worry about having the same costume as anybody else. For this costume I will be combining patterns from regular dresses that I already have and drafting a bit here and there. I will be using a gathered circle skirt made out of colorful netting to get this tutu look. It is a pretty simple costume to construct, but done in the right fabrics, will pack a big punch! I will not be using a wig for her, oh no, the only real way to go is to curl her hair and spray it hot pink! You can buy hair color spray at <a href="http://www.sallybeauty.com/Haircolor-spray/BTZ11,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH">Sally's</a> of course.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8MdTUs-eW7s7qDP1D1dgkVf82lPoF6oW60pxk6Gw6XQN6Gs4xz8FydxOq0gQazYoQR66_GQssQT1s1z2Wa7nnrr0_sqv2YWfB-LQhWUm4IOYQ-9A-bMRgXKm_e3HC6JHUIbPiw1NSgBg/s1600/08grease.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8MdTUs-eW7s7qDP1D1dgkVf82lPoF6oW60pxk6Gw6XQN6Gs4xz8FydxOq0gQazYoQR66_GQssQT1s1z2Wa7nnrr0_sqv2YWfB-LQhWUm4IOYQ-9A-bMRgXKm_e3HC6JHUIbPiw1NSgBg/s320/08grease.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now to get started on our retro inspired costumes!!! The first one is Frenchy from Grease!!! This is actually what I am going to dress up as this year. I had a hard time deciding what I was going to be this year, so my daughter helped me settle on this one, the pink hair was the clincher I believe!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLQDVdFNdyobwWj6hv4zx6jSDxDrqaFcpAv-ZtZ3F9HEJXVMHQIIYdUqoAezhX6CX5IKaq4hjuhD1UXx5oIzF8eEruZGB13X5fqr_H2oid4WUYIYXMnGGqLXpc_apwvK2cbJ7s3j06Oq0/s1600/didi-conn-frenchy--large-msg-125390890292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLQDVdFNdyobwWj6hv4zx6jSDxDrqaFcpAv-ZtZ3F9HEJXVMHQIIYdUqoAezhX6CX5IKaq4hjuhD1UXx5oIzF8eEruZGB13X5fqr_H2oid4WUYIYXMnGGqLXpc_apwvK2cbJ7s3j06Oq0/s1600/didi-conn-frenchy--large-msg-125390890292.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This costume is a simple one to make since essentially it is just an outfit! You can use <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2219-misses-pants-and-skirts.aspx">simplicity 5259</a> for the skirt or any pencil skirt pattern that you prefer. There are a bunch out there that you can use, or you can draft your own. You would want to do your skirt in a light pink fabric, maybe something with some stretch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_z-qwDB6T7EAEdITnH9GqnWgVXCrNmWjn_Y6NJJKMfn623nkxQtpvQbbRpy6ehfh8npXSeRH_Ggo4QfLV4DtCFX0ydpZm97NpiB7-A1Utsi0ym7Lkl1eYrnk0OkLaJaupsK0iQ-bOaaI/s1600/5259.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_z-qwDB6T7EAEdITnH9GqnWgVXCrNmWjn_Y6NJJKMfn623nkxQtpvQbbRpy6ehfh8npXSeRH_Ggo4QfLV4DtCFX0ydpZm97NpiB7-A1Utsi0ym7Lkl1eYrnk0OkLaJaupsK0iQ-bOaaI/s1600/5259.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next you will need a blouse. I have this pattern already so it will be the one that I use. It is <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2369-misses-tops.aspx">new look 6598</a> and I will do mine in a pink fabric that matches the skirt fabric as closely as possible. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgXB0bj19g06q-ipUw0vJTyfPWCARM4JmsxUTo8IgUaez3VjCPbGr6a2vwkQO5eNm4zYt8aPJ-q7rhU-osusXmqq6ofulqxanfne9yUlkQY52zJwGGlEi76seBuVKyTVjPsCc2jDHdO4/s1600/6598.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgXB0bj19g06q-ipUw0vJTyfPWCARM4JmsxUTo8IgUaez3VjCPbGr6a2vwkQO5eNm4zYt8aPJ-q7rhU-osusXmqq6ofulqxanfne9yUlkQY52zJwGGlEi76seBuVKyTVjPsCc2jDHdO4/s1600/6598.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now to the jacket. This is the most important part of the actual costume since it will identify you as a pink lady. I found <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/52010-lightweight-blazer">this pattern</a> on Burdastyle and it is what I am going to use for the jacket. I will use a darker pink, like bubble gum pink as opposed to the baby pink for the outfit. You can get iron on letters at any fabric and craft store and just iron on "Pink Ladies" on the back. In smaller letters you can put Frenchy on the front. You want a medium weight fabric for the jacket. The jacket in this costume is great because we tend to have some chilly Halloween nights here in Colorado. I will spray my <a href="http://www.sallybeauty.com/haircolor-spray/SBS-625063,default,pd.html">hair pink</a> for this look as well, after all, I truly am a beauty school drop out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS2oeZkNpMgfFdVOGFst_oFFJ852ILZr17vnMj38zAe6jfmAd_pZxEc8nm0UkhWU6hT4axinyT5JqU6IWZwdmVrB9NgcseJQpxq1WzlsCIfvbFL988CTfxLkXXWMH4AOA_vNOE0YEPvBQ/s1600/May_126_tech_drawing_large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS2oeZkNpMgfFdVOGFst_oFFJ852ILZr17vnMj38zAe6jfmAd_pZxEc8nm0UkhWU6hT4axinyT5JqU6IWZwdmVrB9NgcseJQpxq1WzlsCIfvbFL988CTfxLkXXWMH4AOA_vNOE0YEPvBQ/s1600/May_126_tech_drawing_large.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia3kEQckZZdqMuii7nnk0_iyadGOA9nwfKE6oCRjG1wtqjX0d-H-Esc3VvjwQ92642CRAr9LPVn9a9X2tZg59o3U2m6B6s-dXN1ZTuowYoJn5lq96fIV8KKKRfyEU0qIc6ZTyVA4l_upk/s1600/sassierrizz2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia3kEQckZZdqMuii7nnk0_iyadGOA9nwfKE6oCRjG1wtqjX0d-H-Esc3VvjwQ92642CRAr9LPVn9a9X2tZg59o3U2m6B6s-dXN1ZTuowYoJn5lq96fIV8KKKRfyEU0qIc6ZTyVA4l_upk/s320/sassierrizz2.jpg" width="166" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can also use the same patterns for a Rizzo costume. Just do the skirt and blouse in black and make sure to bring your sassy smile to the party!!!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next up we will discuss the patterns you would use to be Sandy in her Rydell high cheer leading costume, Marilyn Monroe of course, and Rosie the Riveter!!!!!!!! So look out for that and get working on your creative Halloween costumes!!!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Besos!!!!!!!!!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hello everybody!!!!!!!!!!! I am back from the dead!!!!! I was beyond sick for the whole week, a stomach virus was the culprit. I could barely drag myself around the house to take care of my kids much less sew!!!! I did get some much needed down time however. When you are the mother of 5 there are very few good excuses to lay around and do nothing. This little set back was probably my body's way of telling me to sit my butt down! I laid around with my kids and watched old movies, we watched Gentlemen Prefer Blonds at least 20 times! I swear that my 6 year old is officially in love with Marilyn Monroe! But just because I couldn't get any sewing done doesn't mean that I completely forgot about my obsession! I was on Etsy looking through patterns all week and picked up these 2 beauties!!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a 1950 pattern for a beautiful shirtwaist dress! I love that you only need 3 buttons to make it!!! I also love the pockets. It is copyright 1950, so it has an in between sort of feel because it was made right on the cusp between the 40's and 50's. I can't wait to make this, I think the long sleeved version is perfect for fall/winter in a nice heavier fabric.<br />
<br />

This pattern is a real jewel!!!!!!! It is a 1960's era pattern and has endless variations!!! It is like getting 6 patterns in one!!!!! I bought this one from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/sydcam123">SYDCAM123</a> on Etsy. You have to check out this shop, so many patterns and wonderful prices!!!<br />
<br />
So I must get back to sewing this week. You don't build a whole vintage inspired wardrobe by resting on your laurels!<br />
On another note, please go check out the <a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2011/10/circle-skirt-party/">circle skirt party</a> on Casey's blog, mine is up there, YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are many other beautiful circle skirts to check out as well, make sure you check <a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2011/10/my-circle-skirts/">this post</a> to see the 2 that Casey made herself, they are breathtaking!!!<br />
<br />
So I hope you all got more done than me, but at the same time be sure to take the time to rest to keep your body working at optimum capacity to keep creating beautiful things!!!! Here is a little treat for all of you, enjoy!!!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have been sick all week. I know I am sick when I can't even think about sewing. I did get some sewing done over the weekend however, before my bout of stomach flu got a hold of me!! This however was not sewing for me, but for my sister. It was my sisters birthday last week and I promised her I would sew her up a gift. Now sewing for other people can be a challenge! I know how to fit myself so well by now that I forget how tricky fit can be!!!! I have rules about sewing for others, mostly the rule is, I don't do it!!! Now don't get me wrong, I have daydreamed endlessly about opening an etsy store to sell my wares or doing some seamstress work on the side to earn a little extra money but at the end of the day they are just dreams. Why you ask? Because I don't want my fun sewing time to turn in to the stress of work!! So that means that when I sew for others, I do it for one reason, LOVE!! It is the only way to get through the project without throwing my sewing machine out the window and/or at the other person!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihshAmNwGmPGO2I9_Sr-4SUCwqetMYfcsrs4qZl49-SHVIYR0ZSUC7-7fEjP0srQqqka2h7iKvGYSsueq5oXlu0youG_8M-biIAr1GFaedCrjQbMZHGMd7eMV-aic_IDfOVsnLcE85vpk/s1600/2286.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihshAmNwGmPGO2I9_Sr-4SUCwqetMYfcsrs4qZl49-SHVIYR0ZSUC7-7fEjP0srQqqka2h7iKvGYSsueq5oXlu0youG_8M-biIAr1GFaedCrjQbMZHGMd7eMV-aic_IDfOVsnLcE85vpk/s1600/2286.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, my sister is still losing her baby weight, and doing a great job of it! But because I know that she is actively losing weight, I don't want to take the time to make her something that is super tailored and will be a pain to take in later. So I decided to go with the super easy skirt pattern pictured above. What-an-epic-fail!!!!!! I wish I had taken the time to take a picture of said skirt after it was sewn up. The pattern is cute and simple enough, but at the end it just look like a gathered frumpy sack with elastic in the waste! HMMMPH! So I set about ripping it apart, I was not going to waste this fabulous sugar skull fabric. I hate ripping and I had to rip off patch pockets, very carefully as to not create a hole that would have no remedy. I got it apart and used the skirt for the bottom of the top I decided to make her. I draped the bust right on her to make sure we got good coverage of the" girls".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTIfLuFuEj4s1kqWutigVZKOFGLxQJfPsVf_QydYOaeuq8llum8oC2KXmnsV8iytvcZI9cO38cQcXs2uB1vjZcjxaVDoXpYioT9wSgukUtsqISp9tCgWRWb0gaSqUbtKwFbRpE1ZfS5O0/s1600/101_2541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTIfLuFuEj4s1kqWutigVZKOFGLxQJfPsVf_QydYOaeuq8llum8oC2KXmnsV8iytvcZI9cO38cQcXs2uB1vjZcjxaVDoXpYioT9wSgukUtsqISp9tCgWRWb0gaSqUbtKwFbRpE1ZfS5O0/s320/101_2541.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the result. It pulls over her head with 3 rows of elastic to accentuate the waist and create a shirring effect. The top front is folded over and sewn down leaving a casing that I slipped the shoulder straps through. The straps gather the top of the front bust and go over the shoulder and are attached at the back bust. She really loved it and it was not only very flattering, but just what her wardrobe needed.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEimdqvGYLmoJwMFZ-wXLN8StQCPiItqWQ9u2WKR-G899XbOtGzZRTF-vCHmosk9LVeCNdAU1alIXgR_2_U2cpmfdm3jnFjNcHIzecTvPUGmeW6Kf7Uw4A12HpAOgzqeUo0eFhpKkme7g/s1600/101_2557.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEimdqvGYLmoJwMFZ-wXLN8StQCPiItqWQ9u2WKR-G899XbOtGzZRTF-vCHmosk9LVeCNdAU1alIXgR_2_U2cpmfdm3jnFjNcHIzecTvPUGmeW6Kf7Uw4A12HpAOgzqeUo0eFhpKkme7g/s320/101_2557.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then to make me feel better after all of the craziness, she danced around a bit to make me giggle!!! So at the end of this adventure, making this birthday gift for my sister,I realized that sewing for family isn't so bad, especially when you have an awesome sister who lets you try things on her without protest and makes you laugh while doing it!! I forsee many more sister projects in the future!!! <br />
<br />
On another note, I have plans to participate in this weeks sew weekly challenge. The theme is Spanish Harlem, come on, how could I not participate?! I did however just have a couple days of pure hell, due to stomach flu. So I have gotten no sewing done all week. I have my fabric and my pattern and it is sitting in my sewing room calling my name, of course I don't think it is quite safe to sew when your head is still spinning. So maybe I can get it done by this weekend if I am feeling like myself again by Friday. Hey, it still counts as long as it's in before the end of Sunday right? and the last time I checked Sunday ends at midnight, so if I post by 11:59, I'm good, right? I hope everyone is feeling better than me!!!!!<br />

It's Give away time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to take this moment to thank all of you who follow my little adventures in sewing and motherhood!!!!! When I started this blog a few months ago, I wasn't sure that it would attract any traffic, I mean, what was I gonna write about? But the beauty of a blog, is that you can write about anything you want! The world is a small place and there is bound to be at least one person who gets you. So to thank all of you who get me, here is a gift!!!! This is a lovely vintage vogue repro pattern V2960. It is brand new and uncut in size DD (12-14-16-18). It would make a lovely addition to any retro sewing pattern stash and hopefully a beautiful dress!! All you have to do is be a follower of this blog, new followers welcome, and comment on this post. I will pick a winner randomly on Monday evening and send this pattern off to it's new home. <br />
<br />
<strong>AMENDMENT: I realized I didn't give you a topic to comment about! You can tell me what fabric you would use to make this pattern out of, that should be fun!!!! If you already commented and did not write on this topic, don't worry!!! I love alll and any of your lovely comments and they will still put you in the drawing for the pattern!!!!!! Have a lovely weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!</strong><br />

It went together flawlessly. I did not have to rip a single stitch. Even the horse hair braid went in without a hitch. It did a great job of giving me a swinging hem. I feel very girly in it and am prone to fits of spinning while wearing it.<br />

And the funny candid shot. I need to close my mouth before I catch a fly in it.<br />
Well there you have it. All in all it was such a fun simple project. Who doesn't love a circle skirt? And now thanks to Casey's measurements, I have a perfect circle skirt pattern which I went ahead and cut out in muslin to have to use forever and ever, or at least until I gain an obligatory 5 lbs during the holidays.<br />
<br />
I have also noticed that I now have 15 followers!!!!!!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!!! I smell a give away coming!!!! <br />

So as promised, here are some more pics of my shirt. It has a definite 40's feel to it even though it is a modern pattern. Again, it is New Look 6598 and I sewed view B.<br />

The sleeves have this notch detail which was a bit of a pain to sew. In theory it was very simple, I just kept messing it up! You have to cut through the fabric right up to the stitching before you turn the notch or it will pucker something awful! I kept cutting through my stitching. So the notch is a bit bigger on my shirt than it is meant to be, oh well. The collar was also interesting to say the least. It goes together well, except the facing comes in 3 pieces which you have to sew together before attaching it. I only used 2 of the pieces. The third piece was for the very back of the neck at the very bottom. I found that I didn't need it. I know that the people who make these patterns know better than I do, but whatever. Next time I will re-draft the facing to include this portion but so that the facing is still done in 2 pieces.<br />

Now on to the circle skirt. I am hemming it with horse hair braid. I have never done this before so it is trial and error. I read a few tutorials online. One is by the wonderful Gertie. You can find it at her blog <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/2010/06/magic-of-horsehair-braid-little.html">here</a>. I also read an informative post over at <a href="http://sewcountrychick.blogspot.com/2011/09/sewing-horsehair-braid-hem.html">Sew Country Chick.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" hca="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCGmkAxGAFMJ9YyDl9RaNOR1cHULjuOWIR8JU7eNExVjXO52dw_66Kt4B3CHT9K0Z6RIerNEdHyol6MjQ1B0oOZsHBlDAudDyt_8huRHwMoVTq2cuF6N0hotb8FDqM56pSZOd7otHg1UI/s320/101_2461.JPG" width="320" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First of all, I had no idea how much to buy, so I bought double the amount of my fabric. So I used 4 yards of fabric, and I bought 8 yards of HH braid, which ended up being more than I needed. First I sewed the braid to the outside all around the hem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ZZMQJVQAdXkufkLko67TOOGkvaFITkUdWzlei8gFmXGjmo5715gqcerJJrCPx2FaA9VSqWqqabb8gsTmzHTcRB7fTRo63CYs3ek05Bs3LkEyVrVmPsrIV6nQmMRGylU1ZRzQ3ZrwKXg/s1600/101_2464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ZZMQJVQAdXkufkLko67TOOGkvaFITkUdWzlei8gFmXGjmo5715gqcerJJrCPx2FaA9VSqWqqabb8gsTmzHTcRB7fTRo63CYs3ek05Bs3LkEyVrVmPsrIV6nQmMRGylU1ZRzQ3ZrwKXg/s320/101_2464.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I folded it inward and pressed the fabric covered edge with my iron, careful not to press on top of the braid. I still have not sewed the braid down. I am afraid of this step. This braid does not have a string at the top to shape the braid in a curve. I read on Gertie's tutorial that the thinner braids don't have them because they are supposed to be easier to shape. Let's hope that is so. I will post the results of course so you will all know if I failed, here's to hoping I don't screw it up!!!!!!!!!!!<br />

Hello everybody!!!!! First of all, how much do you love the pictures of the lovely Katy Perry in the October issue of Instyle? I absolutely love the retro style she has in the shots. The juxtaposition of her pink hair and the 40's hairstyle is just genius. I love this style, it is similar to victory rolls but it isn't. As soon as my hair is grown out in the front I will be doing this, maybe even before then. Not the pink part though, I can only wear my hair black. My natural color is just about 1 shade lighter than black and I use black dye about every 3 months to add shine and dimension. Since my natural color is so dark I can not change it without bleaching first, which fries my hair. Trust me, I went blond last year and had to eventually cut all my hair off and let it grow back. My hair grows very quickly but it wasn't fun. I have been having a lot of fun with my hair and nails this week and soon I would like to do a couple of beauty posts. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br />

Now on to sewing. For September, which is national sewing month, I am participating in a couple of sew alongs. First of all is a Simplicity sew along on facebook. All you have to do is sew any Simplicity or New Look pattern. I sewed up New Look 6598, a button up top with collar and sleeve variations. I sewed view B with some variations of my own. It has a shawl collar. I used a cure red fabric with black polka dots. Here is a not so great pic of me modeling it inside of Bass Pro Shop, I love that store!!! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNR036fJoAOOC3sb9jTRex32l1Tomcx_FLG7BEZqXdWsN28ZZqW8v2jN4VMVLTI7PWd0x5gA2EDRSBkW5JnuquvbhdD3d9iFwpi7MXpyeY7tqu-bQUPhKzrDa1xkgwPKvKF0N0RtI2Pmc/s1600/101_2434.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNR036fJoAOOC3sb9jTRex32l1Tomcx_FLG7BEZqXdWsN28ZZqW8v2jN4VMVLTI7PWd0x5gA2EDRSBkW5JnuquvbhdD3d9iFwpi7MXpyeY7tqu-bQUPhKzrDa1xkgwPKvKF0N0RtI2Pmc/s320/101_2434.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It is supposed to be semi fitted with ties in the back for added fitting. I eliminated this and used elastic in the back waist between the waist darts to add some more definition and I tailored the waist a bit more.I will put up better pics the next time I wear it so you can see the fit and sleeve detail a bit better. I am happy with it, it is a good addition to my wardrobe as I love separates.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you all know I am also sewing a circle skirt for Casey's sew along. I am using a cheetah print quilters weight cotton. I used 4 yards of this 44 inch fabric. I folded my fabric in half, cut edge to cut edge instead of selvage to selvage, this gave me the yardage needed for the circle skirt.I cut out a front and back piece to be sewn together with side seams. I inserted a centered zipper in the left side seam and attached my waist band and finished it with a button.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVHarAc5FlpIXBCYua-OXhnB8ldrdhpEwejzaYzXI75Dsr6rMUVObEQuYrIe_gfNoQWqtmKHCKTwnX2caQIJbwLN21evvdquSQMXEOdZ0NHBHhgykvuvkQKZKPY5Xa_2WRKROOVE52hxw/s1600/101_2438.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVHarAc5FlpIXBCYua-OXhnB8ldrdhpEwejzaYzXI75Dsr6rMUVObEQuYrIe_gfNoQWqtmKHCKTwnX2caQIJbwLN21evvdquSQMXEOdZ0NHBHhgykvuvkQKZKPY5Xa_2WRKROOVE52hxw/s320/101_2438.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It still needs to be hemmed, which I am doing with horse hair braid. This will be my first time hemming with horse hair braid so wish me luck!!! Here it is hanging on my dummy. Here it will hang until tomorrow or Friday when get around to hemming it. I want to make a petticoat as well for this skirt but I don't know if I will get around to it in time to finish the sew along. I will probably put it up without the petticoat and finish that later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbFBgh0dxpZh8JMC5zhEaBAvbgTLff_N5FWQgY8VlDQs0fmUCIDz6V9ZMjgKCtJU62A5lCw_qhlDkKX7R1iTkI8ZX7Y3nderfnyih0NDENpAsgfSg8y8cb5_SX2-hp85HkHhoGi3WgjHE/s1600/101_2440.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbFBgh0dxpZh8JMC5zhEaBAvbgTLff_N5FWQgY8VlDQs0fmUCIDz6V9ZMjgKCtJU62A5lCw_qhlDkKX7R1iTkI8ZX7Y3nderfnyih0NDENpAsgfSg8y8cb5_SX2-hp85HkHhoGi3WgjHE/s320/101_2440.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
So those projects will wrap up national sewing month for me. October is fast approaching and I have Halloween costumes to work on, so that should keep me quite busy, along with regular fall sewing. I hope all of you are having fun with sew alongs and all other sewing activities!!!!<br />
